FMCG

The UK manufacturing industry employs over 2.7 million people and is the 8th largest industrial nation. With many manufacturers and distributors facing price pressures and challenging customer demands, alongside global competition and shorter product lifecycles, the need to continuously improve operations has never been greater.

The Challenge

Alexir Partnership is the only UK independent business in the FMCG sector that can create, package and pack products from design to delivery. Founded in 1989, Alexir Partnership has a turnover of over £30million and has over five specialist divisions offering turnkey solutions to range of brands including; Anchor, Arla, Asda, Batchelors, Hovis, Tesco, M&S, Tate & Lyle and Whittard to name a few!

To support the business’ packing operations at its Edenbridge distribution centre in Kent, Breathe Technologies was commissioned to:

  • Reduce manual handling of the products
  • Improve throughput
  • Build flexibility into the operation
  • Improve space utilisation

The Solution

Breathe Technologies implemented a conveyor system to take pre-printed cartons from individual carton packing lines and merge them onto a central conveyor. Relevant codes were printed onto each carton. Cartons were then packaged and sealed into a main carton, which is sent to a pallet for distribution.

The process enabled Alexir to process 800 cartons per hour. Minimal handling of the product has allowed Alexir to keep improving their operational efficiency and quality, as the business continues to grow.

Working in partnership with Alexir’s in-house engineering team, Breathe provided project leadership and ongoing support and training post implementation.
